Disaster Kit Checklist for Pets
If you live in a disaster prone area (and who doesn’t?), one of the best things you can do for your pet is to prepare ahead of time. Make up a disaster kit and keep it easily accessible, in case you have to evacuate in a hurry. Put all the items in something easy to carry, such as a plastic trash can. You may even want to consider keeping a kit in your car. Here is a list of things you will need.
- Food for at least 7 days
- Bottled water for at least 7 days
- Bowls for food & water
- Manual can opener, if necessary
- Carrier / leash
- ID tags
- Necessary medications for at least 7 days, preferably a month
- Medical records & rabies certificate (put in a plastic ziplock bag)
- Vet’s phone number
- Litter box & scooper
- Cat litter
- Photo & description, in case your pet does get lost
- Bed / blanket
- Brush
- Toys
- Plastic bags and paper towels for cleaning up
